What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty is a surgery designed to pin the ears closer to the head or lessen the appearance of larger-than-average ears. It is most commonly performed on children and teens. However, many young adults seek otoplasty to improve their appearance. Ear deformities can be present at birth, through development, or injury.

Otoplasty Candidates
An otoplasty surgical procedure is ideal for children, teenagers, and adults. Our surgeons utilize ear surgeries in some of the following ways:
- Address oversized ears
- Correct the position of protruding ears
- Improve the appearance of the ears after previous surgery
To be considered a good candidate for otoplasty, you should be in overall good health, be a nonsmoker, have no medical conditions, and have no untreated chronic ear infections. Children must be at least five years old because this is when the ear cartilage is stable for correction. You’ll discuss your cosmetic goals during a consultation with our double board-certified plastic surgeons, Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaró, and determine whether the otoplasty procedure is correct. Your 5th Avenue Plastic Surgery facial plastic surgeon will provide a personalized treatment plan based on your needs and concerns.
The Otoplasty Procedure
The anesthetist administers monitored anesthesia with intravenous sedation and local anesthesia. Correction for protruding ears requires specific surgical techniques to increase the antihelical fold inside the ear and reduce any enlarged conchal cartilage on the ear. Most incisions are hidden on the back of the ear or within the ear folds. After the procedure, internal non-removable sutures are placed to keep the ear cartilage in place, and external stitches close the incision.
Otoplasty Recovery
After the surgery, patients are typically required to wear a head dressing. This helps to reduce swelling and protect the ears as they heal. After three to six days, the sauce is removed and replaced with a sweatband. Stitches are usually removed about seven to 10 days after surgery. Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaró will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions for your procedure. These will include how to take care of your incisions, when to take medications, and how to ensure proper ear care afterward. Following your facial plastic surgeon’s instructions is essential for successful healing after your ear procedure.
