Do you ever wish you could take fat away from certain areas of your body and add it to others? Fat grafting, also known as fat transfer, can be used to take excess fat from a specific area of the body and transfer it to an area lacking volume.

What is Fat Grafting?

Though most people often consider fat a negative concern, a healthy level of fat is essential to maintaining a youthful and perky shape. Fat problems arise when you’ve got too much or too much in the wrong places. Fat cells themselves aren’t bad; they are their abundance and sometimes their placement.

Fat grafting uses liposuction to extract adipose fat tissue from areas of excess and then inject it into areas lacking volume. Any area of the body with excess fat tissue can be used as a donor site. The duality of removing and reinjecting fat allows patients to simultaneously improve contours in one area of the body while adding volume to another.

The Fat Grafting Procedure

Your fat grafting procedure will begin with administering anesthesia. The fat is then extracted from a donor site using liposuction. Small incisions are made during liposuction, and fat is broken apart and removed through a cannula.

Once the fat is removed, it is meticulously cleaned and prepared for transfer using the REVOLVETM Fat Grafting System. This advanced system purifies and concentrates the extracted fat while eliminating contaminants, ensuring the highest quality fat for transfer. Additionally, it preserves the integrity of the fat cells throughout the grafting process, promoting optimal results.

Facial Fat Transfer

Facial fat transfer helps to smooth wrinkles commonly linked to aging while restoring a youthful, rejuvenated appearance. Dr. Farber may strategically inject the processed fat into areas such as the cheeks, lips, and prominent facial wrinkles to enhance facial contours and diminish signs of aging.

Fat Grafting for the Breasts and Body

We can also use fat to augment breasts or buttocks:

  • Buttocks: The Brazilian butt lift is a fat transfer procedure designed to enhance the buttocks. By transferring fat to this area, it can add volume, shape, and lift to the backside.
  • Breasts: Fat grafting is an excellent option for smoothing out depressions or dimples on the breasts while providing a subtle increase in volume.

Fat Grafting Recovery

Recovery from fat grafting involves discomfort from liposuction sites and soreness at grafted areas. A few restrictions allow you to resume your daily activities quickly. Dr. D’Agostino and Dr. Farber will provide a detailed list of instructions.

After a fat transfer procedure, you’ll have two recovery sites: the extraction area and the injection area. Both areas will feel tender, swollen, and bruised. Recovery symptoms fade rapidly, though the amount of fat removed and transferred will impact recovery timelines.

Fat is most vulnerable in the first days following the procedure. To support optimal recovery, patients should minimize pressure on the areas where fat has been transferred. Those who receive fat injections into the buttocks must take extra care to avoid putting pressure on the buttocks during this critical healing period.

Dr. D is AMAZING!

I knew two things were most important to me when looking for the right surgeon: the results and bedside manner. I feel so grateful to have hit the jackpot with Dr D who gave me the BEST of both of those. From the first moment I met her in the consult, I knew she was different from most doctors. She is incredibly kind, sweet, patient, and attentive. She made me feel cared for in a way that’s hard to put into words, but when you’re preparing for a big surgery, it’s the exact type of energy that puts you at total ease. Dr D not only answered all my questions, on multiple different occasions, leading up to surgery but she was extremely patient with them all.

There’s way too many good things to say about Dr. Farber!

I did my research and met with two other doctors before I met with Dr. Farber. There’s way too many good things to say about Dr Farber and staff. I must say he’s very professional and enthusiastic about his profession. The doctor followed up with regular visits to see how I was healing. I waited one whole year before I decided to make a comment about my procedure. To be sure all is good. Now a year later all I have to say is, God bless Dr. Farber. I really appreciate everything he did for me. He is a wonderful person & doctor along with his staff…

FAQ

What is the difference between fat grafting and liposuction?

Liposuction removes excess fat from specific body areas to enhance contour and reduce unwanted fat deposits. Fat grafting involves removing fat via liposuction, processing it, and injecting it into areas that need volume, such as the face, breasts, buttocks, or hands.

Does fat grafting go away if you lose weight?

The transferred fat cells behave like natural fat in the body, meaning they can shrink if you lose weight and expand if you gain weight. Significant weight fluctuations can impact the final results of fat grafting, so maintaining a stable weight is recommended for long-term success.

What is the ideal BMI for fat grafting?

The ideal BMI for fat grafting typically falls between 18.5 and 30. Those with a very low BMI may not have sufficient fat for transfer, while individuals with a higher BMI may have increased risks associated with surgery.

Does fat grafting look natural?

When performed by an experienced surgeon, fat grafting can provide natural-looking results. The technique allows precise sculpting and volume restoration, creating a soft and organic enhancement.

Does fat grafting lift the face?

While it does not physically lift the skin like a facelift, fat grafting can create a more youthful, refreshed appearance by filling in hollowed areas and improving facial contours.
