What is Fat Grafting?

Fat grafting uses liposuction to extract adipose fat tissue from areas of excess and then inject it into areas lacking volume. Any area of the body with excess fat tissue can be used as a donor site. The duality of removing and reinjecting fat allows patients to simultaneously improve contours in one area of the body while adding volume to another.

The Fat Grafting Procedure

Your fat grafting procedure will begin with administering anesthesia. The fat is then extracted from a donor site using liposuction. Small incisions are made during liposuction, and fat is broken apart and removed through a cannula. 

Once the fat is removed, it is meticulously cleaned and prepared for transfer using the REVOLVETM Fat Grafting System. Fat Grafting Recovery

Recovery from fat grafting involves discomfort from liposuction sites and soreness at grafted areas. A few restrictions allow you to resume your daily activities quickly. Dr. D’Agostino and Dr. Farber will provide a detailed list of instructions.

After a fat transfer procedure, you’ll have two recovery sites: the extraction area and the injection area. Both areas will feel tender, swollen, and bruised. Recovery symptoms fade rapidly, though the amount of fat removed and transferred will impact recovery timelines.

Fat is most vulnerable in the first days following the procedure. To support optimal recovery, patients should minimize pressure on the areas where fat has been transferred. Those who receive fat injections into the buttocks must take extra care to avoid putting pressure on the buttocks during this critical healing period.
