Excess skin and fat around eyelids can be a functional and aesthetic concern. Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure that minimizes the excess fat and skin around your eyelids.
What is Blepharoplasty?
Blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that addresses the appearance and functionality of your eyelids. Upper eyelid surgery is often performed when drooping upper eyelid skin interferes with vision or creates a tired look. On the lower lids, surgeons may address issues such as lower eyelid fat that causes puffiness and bags beneath the eyes. For patients who require improvement of both areas, upper and lower blepharoplasty may be recommended, as it rejuvenates the upper and lower eyelids simultaneously.
Some patients may choose a focused approach like upper lid blepharoplasty, while others may benefit more from a lower eyelid blepharoplasty to refine under-eye contours. Regardless of the technique, this procedure removes excess skin, restores smoother contours, and creates a more refreshed appearance. Blepharoplasty can be tailored to the upper or lower eyelids based on each patient’s unique anatomy and aesthetic goals.

The Blepharoplasty Procedure
As your procedure begins, your surgeon, Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaró, will administer general anesthesia or intravenous sedation for your comfort at this time. After doing so, Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaró will make incisions along where the eyelid naturally creases to hide any scarring. Your upper eyelid will be corrected with an incision in the natural crease, where Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaró will remove or reposition fat deposits, tighten the muscles, and remove any excess skin. Lower eyelid surgery uses an incision below the lower lash line. Here, any excess skin and excess fat are removed and repositioned. After the surgery, your incisions are closed with sutures or skin glue. Stitches are removed after one week. Your doctor can recommend laser treatments or chemical peels for discoloration on the lower eyelids. Results from eyelid surgery appear over time as the swelling minimizes. You will notice a more awakened look, less excess skin, and less excess fat around the eyes.
Eyelid Surgery Recovery
After your surgery, Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaró will inform you of any aftercare and recovery instructions to follow. Lubricating ointment and cold compresses can be used. In certain instances, the eyes may be covered with gauze.
After surgery, you may notice swelling, bruising, dry eyes, irritation, and discomfort. Sun-protective eyewear should be worn until you are fully healed from the procedure.

FAQ
What is blepharoplasty, and what does it involve?
Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a procedure to improve the appearance of the upper and/or lower eyelids. It involves removing excess skin, fat, and muscle to create a more youthful and refreshed look.
Who is a good candidate for blepharoplasty?
Good candidates are individuals with drooping eyelids, bags under the eyes, or excess skin and fat around the eyes. They should be in good health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations about the outcome.
How long is the recovery period for blepharoplasty?
Recovery typically takes 1-2 weeks. Most swelling and bruising will diminish within the first week, and patients can usually return to normal activities after 2-3 weeks. Full recovery and final results can take a few months.

What are the risks and complications of blepharoplasty?
Risks include infection, bleeding, dry eyes, difficulty closing the eyes, and asymmetry. More serious complications can involve changes in vision or eyelid position, but these are rare.
