Restore a younger and more attractive cosmetic appearance through a facelift procedure. Performed by our highly skilled double-board-certified plastic surgeons, facelifts are one of our most well-known anti-aging procedures at 5th Avenue Plastic Surgery.

What is a Facelift?

The face and neck lift is one of the most common facial plastic surgical procedures for reducing the visible signs of aging and restoring a more rested and youthful appearance. This procedure is often performed with other methods, such as a brow lift, eyelid surgery, and laser resurfacing, to achieve optimum results. Dr. Tzikas almost always combines facelift surgery with the lipografting procedure, resulting in permanent volume enhancement to the face using a patient’s fat. This combination achieves the most natural outcome without having a windswept or pulled appearance. Excess fat in the neck may be contoured with liposuction simultaneously. No hair is shaved for the procedure, and the hairline is not altered. Today’s facelift is more effective, natural-looking, and longer lasting. Many patients can look as much as 10 to 15 years younger.

Types of Facelifts

Mini Facelift

A mini facelift addresses early signs of aging with quicker recovery when compared to the traditional facelift. The mini facelift offers significant results to the face but does not fully address the neck. It can address jowls, wrinkles, and loose skin. By making incisions around the hairline and ears, your provider will lift and reposition the tissues, giving you results that take five or more years off your appearance.

Deep Plane Facelift

The deep plane facelift offers more dramatic results than a traditional facelift and focuses on the deep plane of the face below the skin, fat, and fascia (also known as the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS)). During a deep plane facelift, the ligaments are released  to reach the deeper structures, and from there, your provider will reposition  the muscles and tissues and address sagging, excess skin, jowls, loss of facial volume, wrinkles, and more.

Extended Deep Plane Facelift

An extended deep plane facelift offers even more dramatic results. It provides the same benefits and advanced techniques as a deep plane facelift but offers those benefits to the neck as well as the face. This allows your surgeon to address sagging skin, deep creases, wrinkles, and volume loss on the face, jawline, and neck area by releasing the ligaments and repositioning the muscles, fat, and tissue. The results leave you with a completely rejuvenated facial and neck appearance and can cut 10-15 years or more off your appearance.

Deep Plane Facelift Candidates

A facelift is an ideal anti-aging technique for a skilled facial plastic surgeon. At 5th Avenue Plastic Surgery, we utilize facelifts in some of the following ways:

  • Restore a more youthful look in an aging face
  • Reduce sagging skin
  • Smooth folds of skin on the cheeks and jawline
  • Tighten and correct the sagging muscle and skin of the neck.

To be considered a good candidate, you should be in overall good health with no medical conditions that will affect your healing process. During a consultation, you’ll discuss your goals for facial rejuvenation and determine whether a facelift is compatible with your aesthetic goals.

Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaro will give you a complete and professional opinion on the best ways to reverse your unwanted signs of aging.

The Facelift Procedure

A facelift begins with medications administered to maximize your comfort during the surgery. Your incisions will depend on the treatment plan you have decided on with Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaro. Incisions may be made in traditional facelift positions, limited incision facelift positions, or neck lift positions.

Fat can be sculpted, repositioned, or redistributed in the face. The tissue and muscles are lifted, and excess skin is removed. The deep plane facelift technique involves deeper dissection and less skin dissection. Ligaments in the face are released and the face can be mobilized to a more vertical and youthful position. Because there is less stretching of the skin, the result is much more natural.

The limited facelift involves shorter incisions along the earlobe and is performed on patients with less skin laxity.

A neck lift involves incisions near the front of the ear lobe wrapping behind the ear. These address sagging jowls, loose skin, and fat accumulation below the chin. The neck contour is treated as needed or on an individual basis . The layer of the neck treated includes the deep and superficial fat , the submandibular glands. The deep muscles and the platysma muscle.

After your procedure is completed, your incisions will be carefully sutured. The hairline or natural contours of the face typically hide the incisions.

Facelift Recovery

Facelift patients typically spend their first night in our facility monitored by a registered nurse. The sutures are removed in six to seven days. Bruising is minimal, and swelling will be reduced significantly within seven to 10 days. Make-up may be worn for seven to ten days, and the facelift patient can return to most normal routines within two to three weeks. We routinely utilize PRP (platelet-rich plasma) infrared light therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy to improve the healing time significantly. These treatments are all performed in our state-of-the-art facility.

FAQ

What is a facelift, and what does it involve?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to reduce signs of aging on the face and neck. It involves lifting and tightening the underlying facial muscles and removing excess skin to create a more youthful appearance.

Who is a good candidate for a facelift?

Good candidates for a facelift are individuals who have noticeable sagging skin, deep creases, and loss of muscle tone in the face and neck but still have skin elasticity. Candidates should be in good general health and have realistic expectations.

What is the recovery time for a facelift?

Recovery time can vary, but most patients can expect to return to normal activities within 2-3 weeks. Swelling and bruising typically subside within the first few weeks, but it may take several months for the final results to be fully visible.

Are the results of a facelift permanent?

While a facelift can provide long-lasting results, it does not stop the aging process. The results can last for many years, but factors like genetics, lifestyle, and skincare can influence the longevity of the results.

What are the risks and complications associated with a facelift?

As with any surgical procedure, a facelift carries risks such as infection, bleeding, scarring, and adverse reactions to anesthesia. Specific complications may include nerve injury, hair loss at the incision sites, and skin irregularities.
