A chin augmentation is ideal for contouring the chin through enhancement (genioplasty) or reduction surgery (mentoplasty). Performed by highly skilled and educated double-board-certified facial plastic surgeons at 5th Avenue Plastic Surgery, a chin augmentation can leave you with visible chin and facial enhancements.
What is a Chin Augmentation?
The position of the chin is of prime importance to the facial profile. A recessive chin due to weak skeletal features usually results in an unbalanced face appearance. It can often make a nose look more prominent and conspicuous, and a double chin may result because it is too short. Rhinoplasty patients also have chin augmentation performed to create a more harmonious profile. Chin implants are made of synthetic material that feels like natural tissue usually found in the chin and are available in various sizes and shapes. This allows custom fitting of the implant to the configurations of the face.

Chin Augmentation Candidates
A chin augmentation can boost the quality of life of individuals with self-confidence issues. Our surgeons utilize chin augmentation surgeries in some of the following ways:
- Enhance chins that lack projection or are too short
- Boost confidence in individuals who are insecure because of their chin
- Decrease the appearance of a prominent chin
- Balance facial features
To be considered a good candidate, you should be in overall good health with no medical conditions that will affect your healing process. During a consultation, you’ll discuss your cosmetic goals for chin augmentation and determine whether the procedure is correct. One of our double-board-certified plastic surgeons will provide a personalized treatment plan based on your needs and concerns.
The Chin Augmentation Procedure
The anesthetist administers monitored anesthesia with intravenous sedation and local anesthesia. Some chin augmentation procedures can be performed under local anesthesia. Afterward, your surgeon will make incisions at the predetermined locations that you have decided on. Incision options include inside the mouth or under the chin. The chin shape and size are then altered with an implant or bone-shaving technique, depending on whether you want the chin to appear larger or smaller. Once the chin has been properly contoured, the incisions are closed with sutures, skin adhesives, or medical-grade tapes.
Chin Augmentation Recovery
Chewing will likely be limited immediately after chin surgery, and a liquid and soft food diet may be required for a few days. Most patients feel a stretched, tight sensation after the procedure, but this usually subsides within a week. Your double-board -certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaró will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions for your system. These will include how to take care of your incisions and ensure proper care for the area afterward.
