Blepharoplasty Candidates
Candidates for eyelid surgery include individuals in overall good health with no serious medical condition that can affect their healing., nonsmokers, individuals without severe conditions of the eye, and individuals with aligning surgery goals.
Dr. Tzikas and Dr. Mascaró use eyelid surgery to treat:
- Loose or sagging skin
- Skin that folds or disrupts the natural contour of the eyelid
- Skin that impairs your vision
- Prominent bags under the eyes
- Drooping lower eyelids that display the white under the iris
Relaxing the forehead and eyebrow skin can cause a drooping upper eyelid.
Please note that the best way to determine candidacy is to schedule a consultation appointment at 5th Avenue Plastic Surgery.
The Blepharoplasty Procedure
As your procedure begins, your surgeon, Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaró, will administer general anesthesia or intravenous sedation for your comfort at this time. After doing so, Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaró will make incisions along where the eyelid naturally creases to hide any scarring. Your upper eyelid will be corrected with an incision in the natural crease, where Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaró will remove or reposition fat deposits, tighten the muscles, and remove any excess skin. Lower eyelid surgery uses an incision below the lower lash line. Here, any excess skin and excess fat are removed and repositioned. After the surgery, your incisions are closed with sutures or skin glue. Stitches are removed after one week. Your doctor can recommend laser treatments or chemical peels for discoloration on the lower eyelids. Results from eyelid surgery appear over time as the swelling minimizes. You will notice a more awakened look, less excess skin, and less excess fat around the eyes.
Blepharoplasty Recovery
After your surgery, Dr. Tzikas or Dr. Mascaró will inform you of any aftercare and recovery instructions to follow. Lubricating ointment and cold compresses can be used. In certain instances, the eyes may be covered with gauze.
After surgery, you may notice swelling, bruising, dry eyes, irritation, and discomfort. Sun-protective eyewear should be worn until you are fully healed from the procedure.
