It’s perfectly normal to have large or different sized nipples. Like breasts and areolas (pigmented areas around the nipples), nipples vary widely in shape, color, and size. Large nipple size and asymmetry, however, can potentially cause physical and emotional stress.
Some people, both men and women, may have long, dangling, or protruding nipples. In these cases, body-hugging clothing and bras can be uncomfortable to wear. Whether you’re at the gym, in a suit, on the beach, or in a champagne dress, comfort and confidence are paramount. In this case, nipple correction surgery can help.
What is Nipple Correction Surgery?
Nipple correction surgery can correct or improve aesthetic issues associated with enlarged, asymmetrical, inverted, or protruding nipples that can develop from a previous surgery, trauma, cancer or a congenital anomaly. It can correct nipple hypertrophy – enlarged nipples and other epithelial tissues. Often performed in conjunction with other chest or breast procedures, nipple reduction is a procedure with very high patient satisfaction.
What Do You Desire From Nipple Correction?
Being comfortable in our bodies and clothing is a big part of our self-image. Individuals with nipple hypertrophy or uneven nipples often report physical discomfort. More than just uncomfortable, this can negatively impact self-esteem.
Nipple correction surgery makes the aesthetics of the breast and chest more appealing and makes clothing more comfortable. During your initial consultation, Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino may recommend you undertake nipple reduction in conjunction with another procedure.
What Other Cosmetic Procedures Frequently Accompany Nipple Correction?
Breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lift, and areola reduction are all procedures often recommended in conjunction with nipple correction surgery. These procedures, when done in tandem with a nipple correction, produce more symmetrical, firm, and youthful breasts — Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino recommend procedures based on your concerns and desires.

The Nipple Correction Surgery Procedure
On the day of your procedure, Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino will answer your final questions or concerns. Before our anesthesiologist administers your anesthesia, Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino will make pre-op markings on your anatomy and carry out extensive checks. During your procedure, our staff will frequently update family or accompanying persons as to your status and how your procedure is advancing.
In the case of nipple inversion surgery, a small incision is made surrounding the areola to reduce visible scarring. The connective tissue stabilizing the nipple is severed, and the problem ducts are cut. Afterward, you receive a stitch around the area, and Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino may inject dermal filler to prevent retraction.
People who have undergone breast cancer may have gone through reconstructive surgeries after a mastectomy. After breast reconstruction, a patient may want to undergo nipple reconstruction. In this surgery, small incisions are made on the tip of the breast to mimic the appearance of a nipple.
