WHAT SHOULD YOU KNOW BEFORE AUGMENTATION?
Before surgery, we encourage each patient to consider their long-term aesthetic goals and how breast enhancement may impact their life and lifestyle. Several methods can help you visualize and assess how you will feel and look with your enhanced figure.
During your consultation, you and our plastic surgeons will collaborate to determine the best implant material for you. This consultation is the perfect opportunity to ask questions and address any concerns about your procedure.
Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino will guide you through different implant sizes and allow you to try on specially designed sizing devices to find the best fit. Using biodimensional planning and the latest technology, they ensures a customized approach to help you achieve a natural, balanced, and beautiful result.
Breast Implants
While both implant types have a silicone outer shell, saline implants are filled with sterile salt water, while silicone implants contain safe, medical-grade silicone—the same non-toxic material used in other medical devices. Due to their natural look and feel, silicone implants are the most commonly recommended.
Each type has its benefits. For example, saline implants allow for a smaller incision since they are filled after placement, while silicone implants offer a more natural or firmer feel. Additionally, implants come in various sizes, textures, and shapes. Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino will help you carefully determine the best option for your needs.
Implant Placement
Implants can be placed either on top of the chest muscle or underneath it. There are benefits to each option – placing the implants underneath the muscle can lengthen recovery but provide a more natural feel. Placing them on top of the muscle can provide better projection but may cause the implant to be more visible. This will be part of your discussion with Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino.
Incision Pattern
The most common incision pattern for breast augmentation is placed underneath the crease of the breast. Other options include around the nipple and inside the armpit. Your ideal incision can depend on factors like your chosen implant and preferences.

WHEN IS IT TIME TO CONSIDER BREAST AUGMENTATION?
At 5th Avenue Plastic Surgery, breast augmentation is a highly personalized procedure. We cater to patients’ specific desires and goals by customizing their treatment plans. Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino understand that patients seek augmentation for a variety of reasons and ensure your surgical plan is designed to match your expectations. Breast augmentation improves the balance of your breast contours while increasing the fullness and projection of the breast. Surgery often results in increased self-confidence and improved self-esteem.
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular types of cosmetic surgeries and its outcomes can be enhanced with additional treatments, depending on your needs and concerns. If you’re also experiencing varying degrees of breast drooping, you may need a breast lift as a part of your individualized treatment plan. A breast lift is designed to raise and reshape the breast by removing excess skin and tightening surrounding tissues to create a new breast contour. During your consultation, Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino will determine which procedure is necessary to address your specific concerns. While both surgeries can be performed separately, certain conditions are best addressed by a combination of methods performed simultaneously.
BREAST AUGMENTATION CANDIDATES
To be considered a good candidate for breast augmentation, you should be in overall good health and able to undergo surgery. Most women who opt for breast augmentation are unhappy with the size, shape, or proportion of their breasts and want to add implants to better fill out their figure. Breast augmentation can easily be combined with a breast lift or included as part of a mommy makeover. If you’re planning to become pregnant or breastfeed, Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino can discuss your options for taking extra steps accordingly.
If you’re considering breastfeeding later in life, discuss this goal with our surgical team. During your consultation, Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino will discuss any concerns you may have and provide additional recommendations and information to create successful surgical outcomes.
THE BREAST AUGMENTATION PROCEDURE
Breast augmentation begins by creating your preferred incisions. From there, Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino will create a small pocket in the breast and then place the implant. Once in place, the incisions will be closed, and you’ll be made ready for your recovery.
Breast implants are placed within the breast pocket either beneath the pectoral muscle (submuscular) or beneath the breast itself (subglandular). Because submuscular placement provides more soft tissue coverage of the implant, it creates a natural breast slope and is the most popular method of implant placement. Dr. Farber and Dr. D’Agostino will discuss each option.
Incisions are made in inconspicuous areas, such as under the areola or under the breast fold. The type of incision made is based on the implant used and your individual anatomy. Once the implant is in place and the incisions closed, you’ll be taken to a recovery area until you’re ready to be released. Typically, patients leave approximately one hour after surgery has been completed.
BREAST AUGMENTATION RECOVERY
Breast augmentation typically requires 1-2 weeks of downtime. You’ll be instructed to limit your activity level and focus on resting throughout this phase, checking in with our team regularly to monitor your progress. One essential step is wearing a specialized surgical bra, which helps support your new breasts and relieves pressure from your incisions. Our team will give you detailed instructions on caring for your incisions, taking medications, and more during your pre-operative appointment. It may take 3-6 months for your implants to fully settle into their final appearance, and swelling will continue to fade throughout this time. By one year after surgery, your incisions should be completely faded and you can enjoy your results for years to come.
Before the day of surgery, prescriptions for antibiotics and pain medications are made available and should be obtained before the procedure. Specific postoperative instructions and support garments will be provided to aid in recovery. Strict adherence to these instructions is vital to the success of any surgery.
