Weight fluctuations, aging, and genetics play a significant role in the appearance of the upper arms. Accumulation of fat, loose skin, and excess tissue may develop that is not responsive to exercise. A brachioplasty can address these issues.

What is Brachioplasty Surgery?

Brachioplasty; also known as an arm lift, is recommended for patients with excessive saggy skin. At times brachioplasty can be combined with liposuction when excess fat is also present.

Brachioplasty Candidates

Ideal arm lift patients include those with significant excess skin in the upper arm that is untreatable by diet and exercise. To be considered a good candidate for Brachioplasty surgery you should be in overall good health, a non-smoker, have a BMI of 30 or less and be at a stable weight for at least 6 months.

The Brachioplasty Procedure

The procedure begins with administering local anesthesia. Your surgeon, Dr. D’Agostino, will make an incision that will include the amount of excess skin. The incision will be carefully planned to minimize visibility. The amount of skin that needs removal will dictate the length of the incision.  Your incisions will be closed with body-absorbable sutures or stitches, most times a drain is not necessary.

Brachioplasty Recovery

After your procedure, compression sleeves must be worn for about 2-3 weeks to help minimize swelling. Dr. D’Agostino will have you schedule follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing and remove any drains if needed. After surgery, you’ll experience swelling and bruising that typically subsides within a few weeks. You’ll likely experience mild discomfort in your arm and armpit. Dr. D’Agostino will provide detailed aftercare instructions for you to follow. Smoother, slimmer, and toned arms are noticeable immediately after the procedure. You can expect to see full results after the swelling subsides.

Dr. D is AMAZING!

I knew two things were most important to me when looking for the right surgeon: the results and bedside manner. I feel so grateful to have hit the jackpot with Dr D who gave me the BEST of both of those. From the first moment I met her in the consult, I knew she was different from most doctors. She is incredibly kind, sweet, patient, and attentive. She made me feel cared for in a way that’s hard to put into words, but when you’re preparing for a big surgery, it’s the exact type of energy that puts you at total ease. Dr D not only answered all my questions, on multiple different occasions, leading up to surgery but she was extremely patient with them all.

FAQ

How long does swelling last after brachioplasty?

Swelling after brachioplasty typically peaks within the first week and gradually subsides over the following 4-6 weeks. However, some residual swelling may persist for up to 3 months. Wearing compression garments as directed by your surgeon can help reduce swelling and promote faster healing.

Can brachioplasty be combined with other procedures?

Yes, brachioplasty can often be combined with other body contouring procedures such as liposuction, breast surgery, or tummy tuck. This approach, at one time "mommy makeover," can address multiple areas of concern in a single surgical session, potentially reducing overall recovery time and costs.

Will brachioplasty affect my ability to exercise?

While you'll need to avoid strenuous arm exercises for 6 weeks after surgery, light walking is encouraged within days of the procedure. Most patients can resume full exercise routines, including weight lifting, after 6-8 weeks, following their surgeon's guidance.

How visible will the scars be after brachioplasty?

Brachioplasty scars typically run from the armpit to the elbow on the inner aspect of the arm. While initially noticeable, these scars tend to fade significantly over time. Your surgeon will place incisions strategically to minimize visibility when your arms are at rest.

Is there a non-surgical alternative to brachioplasty?

For patients with minimal skin laxity and primarily excess fat, liposuction with renuvion for skin tightening might be an option. However, for significant excess skin or laxity, brachioplasty remains the most effective solution.
