Quick Links
Sagging loose skin and excess fat of the lower abdomen can cause persistent skin irritation, rashes, open wounds, infections, and diminished confidence. A panniculectomy, similar to an abdominoplasty, will remove excess tissue but is limited to the lower abdomen. This creates a smoother abdominal contour but does not address the muscles like a tummy tuck.
What is a Panniculectomy?
There are a variety of reasons that excess fat and skin can develop in the lower abdomen. These include aging, genetics, pregnancy, significant weight loss, and previous surgery such as a c-section. The goal of a panniculectomy is not to help you lose weight. It is to diminish the excess skin and fat in the lower abdomen.

Panniculectomy Candidates
Ideal candidates for panniculectomy include men or women who are uncomfortable with the appearance of the lower abdomen. To be considered a good candidate for panniculectomy surgery you should be in overall good health, a non-smoker, have a BMI of 30 or less and be at a stable weight for at least 6 months.
The Panniculectomy Procedure
Anesthesia will be administered. A horizontal incision will be carefully placed low on the abdomen. The excess skin and tissue is removed, and the remaining skin is sutured together.

During panniculectomy recovery, bandages or gauze are applied to your incisions, and a compression garment should be worn. These dressings can reduce swelling and support the abdomen’s structure as you heal. Drainage tubes will be placed during the surgery to help drain any excess fluids from the surgical area. Dr. D’Agostino will provide detailed aftercare instructions, including how to care for the surgical site, when to take medications, and concerns to watch out for during recovery. You will need to take a couple of weeks off work while you recover and need to avoid any strenuous physical activity. Healing may involve swelling, discomfort, and the inability to stand upright. Within one to two weeks, you should be able to stand. Please follow all aftercare instructions to aid your body in the healing process.
