Quick Links
Gynecomastia is a condition in which the enlargement of breast tissue affects the appearance of a man’s chest. This condition can be prompted at any age by hormonal changes, genetics, obesity, and drug usage. Gynecomastia can have a severe impact on self-confidence and make it difficult to exercise. Unfortunately, a healthy diet will not be able to alter the appearance of the excess tissue.
What is Gynecomastia Surgery?
Gynecomastia surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty, decreases the size of the breasts in men by flattening the chest area and creating more masculine upper body contours. Gynecomastia can cause the chest to sag, which can stretch the areola. In many cases, plastic surgery can also adjust the position and size of the areola. Gynecomastia can occur in one or both breasts.

Gynecomastia Surgery Candidates
Candidates for gynecomastia surgery include individuals who are unhappy with the appearance of their chest, from the contour, sagging, presence of loose skin, protuberant areolas, and asymmetry of the breasts. To be considered a good candidate for Gynecomastia surgery you should be in overall good health, a non-smoker, have a BMI of 30 or less, and be at a stable weight for at least 6 months.
Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia surgery involves the use of anesthesia, liposuction, and excision techniques. Depending on the severity of your case and the type of excess tissue (breast tissue, fat, or skin) you and double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr.D’Agostino can decide the appropriate modality.
Liposuction Technique
Liposuction can be used in gynecomastia cases where mild breast tissue and fat are present. During liposuction, a cannula is used to remove the excess tissue. The type of excess tissue will dictate the best liposuction technique to achieve your goals.
Excision Technique
Excision techniques are used when there is moderate to severe excess tissue or when there is excess skin present. Excision is also helpful for patients who need relocation of areolas or areola reduction. The incision patterns vary from case to case.
Gynecomastia Surgery Recovery
During your gynecomastia recovery, bandages or dressings and a compression garment will be used to protect the surgery area, reduce swelling, and support your chest during healing. After surgery, a drain may be necessary to help any excess fluid leave the body. Dr. D’Agostino will give you detailed instructions on aftercare, including when to take medications, any concerns to look out for, and how to take care of your surgical area. Heavy lifting should be avoided to allow the chest area to heal correctly. You may experience bruising and discomfort in your surgery area. However, this is manageable with medication. Following Dr. D’Agostino’s aftercare instructions is essential to help your body heal. The results from your surgery are long-lasting and can take three to six months to emerge fully.
