SkinPen microneedling supports the skin’s natural remodeling response by creating precise, controlled microchannels. At 5th Avenue Plastic Surgery, patients may personalize treatment by pairing SkinPen with platelet rich plasma, also called PRP, or VAMP. Your provider will recommend an approach based on your skin, concerns, and goals.

Our SkinPen microneedling treatments in Delray Beach offer a nonsurgical option for patients concerned about acne scars, uneven texture, fine lines, or overall skin quality. Every plan begins with a consultation and an in person evaluation of your skin.

What Is SkinPen Microneedling?

SkinPen is a medical microneedling device that uses a sterile, single use needle cartridge to create thousands of controlled microchannels in the skin. These microchannels prompt the skin’s natural repair response and support new collagen and elastin production. These structural proteins contribute to the skin’s firmness, thickness, and smoothness.

Because SkinPen relies on mechanical stimulation rather than heat or chemicals, it creates controlled microinjuries without adding thermal energy to the skin.

The SkinPen Precision system is FDA cleared to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults aged 22 and older with all Fitzpatrick skin types. It is also cleared to improve the appearance of wrinkles on the neck for adults with Fitzpatrick skin types II through IV. These clearances apply to the SkinPen device and its specific cleared indications. They do not mean that SkinPen with PRP or SkinPen with VAMP is FDA cleared as a combination treatment for every concern discussed on this page.

What Is PRP?

Platelet rich plasma, commonly shortened to PRP, is prepared from a small sample of your own blood. During your appointment:

  • A small vial of blood is drawn, similar to a routine lab draw.
  • The vial is placed in a centrifuge, which separates the blood into its component layers.
  • The platelet rich plasma layer is isolated for use in your treatment.

PRP contains platelets and growth factors involved in the body’s natural healing processes. Because PRP is autologous, meaning it comes from your own blood, it does not introduce a donor material or synthetic filler. When PRP microneedling is recommended, your provider will explain how PRP is used during your appointment and what it may add to your individualized plan.

5th Avenue Plastic Surgery also offers PRP on its own for facial and under eye rejuvenation as well as scalp and hair restoration. You can learn more on our PRP Treatments in Delray Beach page.

What Is VAMP?

VAMP is a sterile topical biorevitalizing solution that combines hyaluronic acid with vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and medical grade polydeoxyribonucleotides, also called PDRN. PDRN consists of purified DNA fragments derived from salmon. The formula is designed to support hydration and a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

VAMP Microneedling pairs this topical solution with a SkinPen appointment as a customized aesthetic option. It differs from PRP because VAMP is a prepared formulation, while PRP is made from a sample of your own blood. Your provider will explain how VAMP is used during the appointment, why it may be recommended for your skin, and what results are realistic for your plan.

SkinPen with PRP or VAMP

5th Avenue Plastic Surgery offers SkinPen with PRP and SkinPen with VAMP in Delray Beach. SkinPen provides the mechanical microneedling portion of treatment. PRP or VAMP may be selected as an additional option based on your skin and goals.

PRP may appeal to patients who prefer an option prepared from their own blood and its naturally occurring platelets and growth factors. VAMP may appeal to patients seeking a prepared topical formula containing hyaluronic acid, vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and PDRN. These options are not interchangeable, and neither is automatically appropriate for every patient. Your provider will review the differences and recommend SkinPen alone, SkinPen with PRP, or SkinPen with VAMP after evaluating your skin.

Potential Benefits of SkinPen Microneedling

SkinPen microneedling may support the skin’s remodeling response and may help:

  • Improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults aged 22 and older
  • Improve the appearance of wrinkles on the neck for appropriate skin types
  • Support smoother and more even looking texture as part of an individualized aesthetic plan
  • Encourage natural collagen and elastin production

SkinPen’s FDA cleared indications are specifically defined. Broader aesthetic concerns such as fine lines, visible pores, dullness, mild laxity, and overall skin quality may be discussed during consultation, but they should not be interpreted as FDA cleared indications for SkinPen or for the SkinPen with PRP or VAMP combinations.

Why Add PRP or VAMP?

PRP and VAMP are optional additions that may be recommended to complement a SkinPen treatment. PRP contributes platelets and growth factors involved in natural healing processes. VAMP provides a topical blend of hyaluronic acid, vitamins, amino acids, minerals, and PDRN designed to support hydration and skin revitalization. Potential benefits depend on the selected option, the concern being addressed, and the patient’s individual response. Results are not guaranteed.

SkinPen for Acne Scar Treatment and Other Concerns

At our Delray Beach office, SkinPen may be performed on the face or neck. Depending on your candidacy and individualized treatment plan, your provider may discuss SkinPen alone or SkinPen with PRP or VAMP for concerns such as:

  • Facial acne scarring
  • Neck wrinkles and crepey looking neck texture
  • Uneven or rough looking skin texture
  • The appearance of visible pores
  • Fine lines
  • Dullness and loss of radiance
  • Early signs of aging and mild laxity

Only facial acne scars and qualifying neck wrinkles fall within SkinPen’s FDA cleared indications. The other concerns listed above, along with the possible addition of PRP or VAMP, are considered during a personalized consultation.

What to Expect During Treatment

Consultation and skin evaluation. Your appointment begins with a review of your medical history, medications, skincare routine, and goals, along with an in person assessment of your skin. This is when candidacy is determined and your treatment plan is created.

Treatment option selection. Your provider will explain the differences among SkinPen alone, SkinPen with PRP, and SkinPen with VAMP. If PRP is selected, a small amount of blood is drawn and processed on site. If VAMP is selected, the prepared topical formula is made ready for your appointment.

Cleansing and numbing. The treatment area is cleansed and prepared. A topical numbing agent is applied and given time to take effect before treatment begins.

SkinPen microneedling. Your provider passes the device across the treatment area using settings chosen for the area and concern. Most patients describe the sensation as light vibration with mild pressure.

PRP or VAMP use. If your plan includes PRP or VAMP, your provider will use the selected option according to the practice’s clinical protocol and will explain that process before treatment.

Appointment length. The full appointment may include intake, preparation, numbing, microneedling, and the selected PRP or VAMP option. Our team will provide a time estimate when you schedule.

Aftercare. You will receive personalized instructions that explain what to expect, which products to pause, and when you can resume your usual routine.

Downtime and Recovery

Microneedling is minimally invasive, but it does prompt a visible healing response. During the first day or two, treated skin may look and feel similar to a mild or moderate sunburn. Temporary effects can include:

  • Redness or flushing
  • Dryness and tightness
  • Tenderness or sensitivity to touch
  • Mild swelling
  • Light peeling or flaking as the skin turns over

General aftercare guidance may include:

  • Avoid direct sun exposure and use the sun protection your provider recommends
  • Avoid strenuous exercise, sweating, saunas, steam, and hot showers for the period your provider specifies
  • Pause exfoliants, retinoids, acids, and other active or irritating skincare products until cleared to resume
  • Keep the skin clean and hydrated using only products approved by your provider
  • Do not pick at or aggressively exfoliate peeling skin

Diligent sun protection is especially important during recovery in South Florida. Follow the specific instructions your provider gives you because they will be tailored to your treatment depth, treated area, skin type, and selected treatment option.

Results and Your Treatment Plan

Results develop gradually as the skin completes its natural remodeling process. Some patients may first notice changes in texture or radiance, while other changes may become visible over the following weeks. The timing and extent of any improvement vary by patient, concern, and treatment option.

The number and timing of treatments also vary. Appointments may be scheduled one month or longer apart, depending on your provider’s recommendation and how your skin responds. Your provider will create a plan for you rather than promising a fixed number of sessions or a specific duration of results.

Candidates and Safety

A consultation is required to determine whether SkinPen alone, SkinPen with PRP, or SkinPen with VAMP is appropriate for you. Good candidates are generally adults in good overall health who have realistic expectations and want to address acne scarring or other skin quality concerns without surgery.

According to SkinPen’s manufacturer labeling, the device should not be used on patients who have:

  • Active skin cancer in the treatment area
  • Open wounds, sores, active breakouts, or irritated skin in the treatment area
  • A known allergy to stainless steel or anesthetics
  • A bleeding disorder or hemostatic dysfunction
  • Pregnancy or current nursing status
  • Current use of medication containing isotretinoin, such as Accutane

Your provider will also review factors such as recent or past isotretinoin use, a history of keloid or hypertrophic scarring, cold sores, autoimmune conditions, immunosuppressive therapies, blood thinning medication, active skin infections, recent sun exposure, self tanning products, and topical retinoid use.

If PRP is being considered, disclose blood clotting conditions and any medication or supplement that may affect platelet function. Bring a complete list of medications and supplements to your consultation. The final safety review will follow current manufacturer labeling and the practice’s clinical protocols.
