What is Hair Restoration and Hairline Advancement?
Hair restoration Is performed to restore the hair in areas lacking hair, bald, or that are experiencing hair thinning. There are two main forms of hair restoration including the follicular unit transplant (FUT) method and the follicular unit extraction (FUE) method. In the follicular unit transplant method, skin with the follicles attached is removed from the back of the head and the hair follicles are moved and placed in the desired area. In the follicular unit extraction method, the individual follicles of hair are removed from the back of the scalp without an incision and the hair follicles are placed in the area lacking hair. The main difference between the two is in the harvest of the hair – in the FUT method, a linear scar is left after surgical excision of the tissue to be harvested. In the FUE method, a small circular punch is used so there are no stitches or large incisions made.

Hair Restoration and Hairline Advancement Candidates
Candidates for hair restoration and hairline advancement include those in generally good health. All restoration patients should be individuals with healthy hair on the back and sides of their heads. This is necessary for the transplant. Patients must have ideal expectations of the procedure. The best way to know if you are a good candidate is to schedule a consultation with one of our doctors.
The Hair Restoration Procedure
Before your surgery, the donor area will be trimmed to make the surgery area more accessible and visible to the surgeon. Punch grafts use a tube instrument to punch out the area, whereas FUT grafts are obtained using a scalpel.
Once the donor area is harvested, the recipient area is prepared. Individual follicular grafts are placed in individual slits – think of it like sliding a letter into an envelope. This is done individually. After the session, you will be cleansed, and the area will be wrapped in gauze.
Hair Restoration Recovery
After the surgery, you may experience discomfort, tightness, and swelling in the area. Your stitches from the donor sites will be removed within ten days after the procedure if they are used. FUT procedures have no sutures so there is minimal aftercare. Follow-up appointments are required to ensure that you are healing properly. Some patients experience shedding within six weeks after surgery, with new growth occurring another six weeks after the shedding occurs. Multiple sessions can be beneficial to achieve your desired results.
Hairline Advancement
Hairline advancement is a procedure also commonly referred to as forehead reduction surgery. In this case, an incision is made along the hairline, and the hair is physically advanced forward in order to reduce the size of the forehead. This can be combined with a browlift simultaneously. This is performed under IV sedation, with a recovery time of approximately 4-7 days.
